Envato’s Public Impact Statement 2023

If 2023 swept you up in a whirlwind of change, you’re not alone. The past year served up plenty to fuel our determination and push our boundaries but also delivered shining moments of creativity and entertainment that brought joy and inspiration.

As Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models evolved at breakneck speeds, society was forced to ponder how we would continue to reward and celebrate human creativity. We considered how we would harness these technologies to increase the accessibility of creative tools and content creation and – against this turbulent background – remained committed to helping our community soar.
This Impact Statement reflects our efforts to serve the creative community as a whole. We’ve reached new milestones in subscriber numbers and author earnings. We’ve leveraged AI to elevate the onsite experience for subscribers across the globe, increased internal productivity across all our teams, and done so while supporting creatives as the evolution of technology unfolds – showing that creativity and technology can co-exist.

As we strive towards our vision of becoming the intelligent and essential creative companion, we remain steadfast in our efforts to empower all creatives to thrive. Without further ado, here’s the impact Envato has made over the past year.

Meet your music match: Envato’s ‘Sounds Like’ search redefines discovery

“Where words fail, music speaks.” For anyone who has ever struggled to find the perfect track for a project, Envato—the global destination for digital creative assets and templates—has introduced Sounds Like search to make music discovery easier than ever. Part of an exciting series of updates to revamp Envato’s music library, this innovative tool enables users to find royalty-free music based on sound, not just keywords, making music discovery simpler, faster, and more intuitive.

Envato’s Sounds Like search feature is a game-changer for creatives, filmmakers, and marketers who know the struggle—and time-consuming nature—of matching music to mood. By pasting a URL from Spotify or YouTube, users can instantly access a curated list of tracks in Envato’s library that mirrors the vibe, tempo, instruments and style of their chosen reference.

“We know from speaking to our users that music is hard to find using words,” says Marine Bassy, Head of Product at Envato. “With Sounds Like search, users can search based on the type of track they are looking for based on what they’ve heard before vs having to describe it.”

So how does it work? Every track in the library has a unique ‘fingerprint’, created by the same AI-powered system behind Envato’s decade, genre, and theme filters. When a user copies their Spotify or YouTube reference into the Sounds Like search bar, the system does the heavy lifting—analyzing and fingerprinting parts of the track to compare against tracks in the Elements library. This instantly curates a list of similar tracks, helping the customer find the perfect soundtrack.

With Sounds Like search, Envato is helping their users to connect with music in a way that is more intuitive than ever before. Whether cutting together an epic film trailer or creating background music for a podcast, the tool helps to find tracks that fit—faster.

Universal Music Group and Spotify Strike a New Multi-Year Agreement

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world leader in music-based entertainment, and Spotify, today announced new, multi-year agreements for Recorded Music and Music Publishing focused on growth, innovation, and the advancement of artists’ and songwriters’ success.

“When we first presented our vision for the next stage in the evolution of music subscription several months ago—Steaming 2.0—this is precisely the kind of partnership development we envisioned,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group. “This agreement furthers and broadens the collaboration with Spotify for both our labels and music publisher, advancing artist-centric principles to drive greater monetization for artists and songwriters, as well as enhancing product offerings for consumers.”

“For nearly two decades, Spotify has made good on its commitment to return the music industry to growth, ensuring that we deliver record payouts to the benefit of artists and songwriters each new year,” said Daniel Ek, Spotify’s Founder and CEO. “This partnership ensures we can continue to deliver on this promise by embracing the certainty that constant innovation is key to making paid music subscriptions even more attractive to a broader audience of fans around the world.”

Under the new agreements, UMG and Spotify will collaborate closely to advance the next era of streaming innovation. Artists, songwriters and consumers will benefit from new and evolving offers, new paid subscription tiers, bundling of music and non-music content, and a richer audio and visual content catalog. By deepening audience experiences, driving further engagement and amplifying the connection between artists, songwriters and their fans, the collaboration between these two companies will position the industry for continued subscriber growth and retention.

The new publishing agreement also establishes a direct license between Spotify and Universal Music Publishing Group across Spotify’s current product portfolio in the U.S. and several other countries, which reinforces a mutually beneficial relationship for songwriters on the platform.

Finally, the new agreements renew the companies’ commitment to artist-centric principles, ensuring that artists continue to be properly rewarded for the share of audience engagement that they drive and that their streaming royalties remain protected through the platforms’ application of its fraud detection and enforcement systems.

New LinkedIn profile features help verify identity, detect and remove fake accounts, boost authenticity

I have the pleasure of hearing from you and members across LinkedIn how much value you get from our professional community we’re building. Equally important, is that in order for you to find that next job, learn new skills, or connect with others, you want to feel confident that the people you come across are authentic.

In June, companies globally reported a rise in fraudulent activity across the internet, and I shared in this post about how we were tackling the issue on LinkedIn. I am eager to share that as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping LinkedIn a trusted professional community, we are rolling out new features and systems to help you make more informed decisions about members that you are interacting with and enhancing our automated systems that keep inauthentic profiles and activity off our platform. Whether you are deciding to accept an invitation, learning more about a business opportunity, or exchanging contact information, we want you to be empowered to make decisions having more signals about the authenticity of accounts.

Here’s a preview of what we’re testing and rolling out globally over the next several weeks, and how it’s designed to help keep you safe.

Introducing “About this profile”

We’re adding a new “About this profile” feature that will show you when a profile was created and last updated, along with whether the member has verified a phone number and/or work email associated with their account. We hope that viewing this information will help you make informed decisions, such as when you are deciding whether to accept a connection request or reply to a message.

Starting this week, you can find the “About this profile” feature on each LinkedIn member’s profile page, and soon you’ll see it in more places over the coming weeks, including when viewing invitations and messages. For work emails, our plan is to start with a limited number of companies, but you can expect to see this expand as we add additional companies over time.

LinkedIn Safety Series: Using AI to Protect Member Data

Today, we’re sharing the next post in our Safety Series, as we explore unauthorized scraping on the platform. In our first post, we told you about our definitions of what is and isn’t scraping, and the work our teams do to prevent unauthorized scraping. We’re going a bit deeper into the technical side, as our Anti-Abuse AI team shows how machine learning can help stay ahead of bad actors who want to misuse your information.

Read more about how our teams are using activity sequence modeling techniques against scraping here.
